Scope & content
Written from Greenwich [London]
Douglas apologises for missing his Sunday morning meeting with Sabine, having missed the early coach from Greenwich and having to walk to Chiswick [the Horticultural Society garden at Chiswick, London], missing Sabine by only five minutes; he apologises for the delay in sending the memorandum, having been ill due to lack of sleep: 'the delay which I know must be irksome to you, and it is painful to me not to have been able to do it sooner'; enclosed is a list of items required for his journey [Douglas's third journey to the United States of America] for Sabine's approval and a list of equipment needed from the Zoological Society for approval; he will stay at Greenwich for 10 days, leaving early on Tuesday morning to visit Regent Street [offices of the Horticultural Society of London]; he hopes to see Sabine there to receive his instructions, and if not, then he will go to Chiswick; he hopes to receive an advance of £40 from the Society: 'otherwise I must go in a state, as far as personal comfort is concerned'; the costs of the journey are straining him; Sabine mentioned six weeks ago that he might be able to draw the money due to Douglas during his absence, but he does not know anyone who could do it for him, and perhaps Sabine could arrange for someone to do it; the captain left on Tuesday morning and is expected 'here' [?Greenwich] on Monday evening; he would be happy to receive more letters of introduction
