Scope & content
Written from Regent Street [London]
He visited Mr Smith [William Smith, secretary of Hudson's Bay Company] of the Hudson's Bay House [Hudson Bay House, London] yesterday and was told the ship would not be sailing until the following Thursday or Friday; he has been engaged with the travel arrangements, and everything is packed and ready; Hudson's Bay Company requires a copy of the list of equipment ('perhaps a necessary precaution'), and he has had Mr Scott [unidentified] make one; the draft to be issued for him for £40 was issued for 17 Oct, not the preceding week; Mr Lindley [John Lindley, assistant secretary at the Horticultural Society of London] wrote to Mr McKenson[?] before leaving town, but instead of receiving his money on Tuesday morning, Douglas only received a message saying Lindley had left town for a fortnight: 'yesterday, until I learned the good news in Fenchurch Street [Hudson Bay House, London], I was in great distress'; Mr Goode [Thomas Goode, clerk at the Horticultural Society of London] has kindly been providing for him; he received his instructions from Mr L. [John Lindley]; as he will speak with Sabine again soon, he will not comment on the last clause of Sabine's last letter to Mr Hay [Robert William Hay, under-secretary of state for the colonies], which he would have preferred not to have been sent, as it was not in accordance with his engagement; he received one double-barrelled gun from the Zoological Society, costing £18, 'in preference to three bad ones'; he will not accept anything without the full approval of Mr Vigors [Nicholas Aylward Vigors, secretary of the Zoological Society of London]; the chests are all ready for boarding; he met the captain in the Strand the previous day: 'he and Mr P.[?] are, I am glad to say, well'; he will finish his abstract and deliver it to Sabine with his original notes; he will visit Sabine on Sunday or at another appropriate time
