He received Douglas's letters numbered 1-2 from Liverpool, letters 3-4 from New York [United States of America], the letter dated 1 Jan and the lists; the Horticultural Society is pleased with Douglas's proceedings and his visit to Philadelphia [Pennsylvania, United States of America]; he will send additional lists of plants to be obtained, but Douglas should not lose time sorting and packing those which he has arranged to take, should the lists arrive too late; he is sorry about the delays in Douglas's voyage, but hopes he took the opportunity to further his studies in Spanish; they have not yet received the fruits in spirits, but he has received a letter from Dr Hosack [David Hosack, physician and botanist in New York]; they are particularly looking forward to receiving specimens of fruits from Mr Coxe [William Coxe, pomologist and politician in Burlington, New Jersey]; they will pay for the items the Society wants; all Douglas's friends are well; the garden [the Horticultural Society garden at Chiswick, London] is rapidly taking shape; Ansley[?] has been appointed as under gardener
