Robinson’s letter touched her, especially as he is a childless man; she had the dearest of firstborns for nearly 35 years; Sydney’s praise gave her more pleasure than anyone’s and since ‘that other shock and grief’ they were closer than ever; Mat was sent back to Wynberg [Cape Town, South Africa] with fever and Violet Cecil nursed him; she dreads to hear he may be fit to rejoin the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards; the public nerves are so serious it makes her think the darling’s life was not lost in an easily won battle, and soldiers join to die if necessary
