He invites Robinson to visit and stay overnight on the way to or from Berkeley Castle, and he offers various dates; his pinetum is a wreck as a result of frosts and storms; there are a few good specimens there and in the garden but he does not go in for the hundreds of gardeners’ varieties; his collection is a good one of the old sort but with all the fine specimens gone, including the ‘Mexicans’, some smashed in half; in England’s climate, all gardening is vanity and vexation of spirit, except the artificial and scientific sort, which he does not attempt
