He is fortunate that his older son did not have to go to France until a few days after armistice; he is still thankful for and proud of ‘our country’ ‘in spite the voice of the croakers who crowed loudly before 1914 and are now again raising their miserable voices’; he congratulates Robinson on the work he has done for horticulture and wishes him a happy retirement with his books; he was more sorry over Robinson’s retirement from ‘Gardening Illustrated’ on account of Thomson, who will find it hard to serve a new master, especially if pure commercialism becomes the policy of the paper in place of the art of gardening
