He is glad to hear Maw has established Iris filifolia; he is thankful for the bulbs Maw sent (‘blessed are the hands which send desired bulbs to their friends’) and will look after them well; he has one bulb of Iris histrio which he is nursing with extreme care; he asks for a few bulbs but worries that he has nothing to give in return; he has written to Mr Horace White [Horace Philips White, British consul at Tangier, Morocco] to ask for Iris tingitana, which ought to be introduced in England; he has just flowered a new evansia [crested] iris [Iris milesii] from Kashmir [India], introduced by F. Miles [Frank Miles, artist and horticulturist]
