Scope & content
Written from Shelford, Cambridgeshire. Manuscript
He thanks Maw for the narcissi; he offers to send some irises for Maw’s new garden; he has kept a few small bulbs of Iris boissieri for Maw, which is a new Xiphium from the Geres Mountains in Portugal; it is similar to Iris filifolia but bearded; a few years ago Maw sent him a Xiphium from Sierra Nevada in Spain, which flowered this year; it seemed to be Iris xiphium but more slender, of a different colour, and with a slightly different perianth segment than the wild or cultivated forms; he believes it to be a variety, not a different species; he is looking forward to Maw helping them ‘in cleansing that Aegean statue, the RHS’; he asks Maw for any croci he is getting rid of. Undated [c.Apr 1886; Maw moved to Surrey around April 1886, and the letter refers to his new garden]
