He has received Maw’s sample of tallies, and has also had some very good ones made by Messrs Wedgwood; the Wedgwood tallies are less brittle than Maw’s and a better shape, but will likely be more expensive; both are too brittle, and pencil comes off more easily than on wood tallies, but they have a neater appearance and are more durable; they are good for tree labels, but not for ground labels in lawns as the scythes knock them to pieces, an objection which only applies to large establishments such as Kew; he will communicate with his curator [John Smith] on Maw’s tallies
