Mr Helmsly [William Botting Hemsley], a young aide in their herbarium, who had to retire from ill health, must go abroad for winter; he is very poor so with a little aid they are hoping to send him somewhere he can collect living and dry plants; they have their heart set on Tangiers [Tangier, Morocco] where he can live cheaply and collect plants and insects to sell in England; they have asked Helmsly to write to Maw to ask about cost of living and such in Tangiers; he asks if the Mogador [Essaouira, Morocco] boats go to Tangiers; if his plan works out and Helmsly’s health stands, he would take him on at his own expense as his collector when they visit Morocco in March, as he is ‘an excellent young man and fair practical botanist’
