Written from Royal Gardens, Kew. Manuscript
He would like to go to Tangiers [Tangier, Morocco] no matter what, if Maw is willing; he has written to Sir J.D. Hay [John Drummond Hay, British minister resident to Morocco] to get permission to botanise in the south of the town; he asks if Maw can possibly get away on the 18th or 25th [of March] steamers; Mr Cosson [Ernest Cosson], a botanist from Paris, is here; he will write again to Hay as soon as Maw knows which steamer he can go on; if Maw cannot leave until the 1 Apr they will leave then; he does not want to go without a suitable companion as in his experience it is hard to collect both living and dried plants efficiently alone; he sees the north-west African flora as being of equal scientific interest to any on the globe, and worth making a great sacrifice to collect properly; a month in any part of Morocco should lay a good foundation, either south of Tangiers, south of Marocco city [Marrakesh], or divided between them
