He spent an awful day shopping with Ball [John Ball, botanist] yesterday; the only new things he found were a lightweight cork mattress for 30 shillings of which he bought one for Crump [Edward Crump, a Kew gardener who accompanied them to Morocco] and one for himself, horse hair eye screens in goggles which were very nice but expensive at 6 shillings, a tent hook-strap, which is a long leather thong with hooks from which to hang clothes, leggings of thick linen for riding, with leather around the ankles to prevent snake bites, as Cosson [Ernest Cosson, botanist] says that adders are the pest of the country; if Maw would like a pair of the leggings he should send his leg length so Hooker can order them at 15 to 20 shillings; he recalls Maw having two vulcanised water bottles; he has all the medicines; he asks for the sizes of boxes Maw uses to send plants back to England, whether they are tin or wood, and how many he takes; Maw’s panniers with the leather bag inside have been sent to him today; he will see to Munby [Giles Munby, botanist]; he thanks Maw for his notes on the Androsace, and wishes he could show him the dried specimens, some of which are from Gay [Claude Gay, botanist] and one of which is labelled Androsace carnea
