Scope & content
Written from Tetuan [Tetouan, Morocco]. Manuscript
They have altered their plans and are returning by Ceuta [Morocco] early tomorrow morning; they will sleep there, then send their things overland to Tangiers [Tangier, Morocco]; they will leave on Friday at 6am by the packet boat to Algeciras [Spain], then cross to Tangiers the same day; he is glad he did not leave today as he has a little diarrhoea and will stay indoors; Ball [John Ball, botanist] called on the Spanish consul today and is now out botanising with Crump [Edward Crump, a Kew gardener who accompanied them to Morocco]; he does not believe his illness will be bad, as it came on with a headache but no other pain; he asks Maw to review the fastenings of his bundle of plants, as they are damp and he fears the Iris is rotting; he asks Maw to find out if Martin [proprietor of the Royal Victoria Hotel, Tangier] knows anything about the price of paper for drying their specimens. Dated Wednesday [12 Apr 1871; dated using evidence from ‘Journal of a tour in Marocco and the Great Atlas’ by Ball, Hooker and Maw]
