He thanks Maw for his letter of 12 Nov and information about croci; theirs have done very well on the whole, and he does not want to try any great experiments on them; Maw’s robbery is curious, and he himself had no such adventures in America [United States of America], though he learned a lot; California had had nine months of drought, which had destroyed the herbaceous vegetation, so he focused on the arboreous and fruticose; he found New England charming, was disappointed with the Rocky Mountains and has no love for California; Niagara [Canada] did not disappoint, nor did the big trees; he travelled 7,000-8,000 miles by rail and only missed a connection once, though he did not like the cars; the people were very nice, and A. Gray [Asa Gray, American botanist] is wonderful; this morning he received the enclosed from Mr Layard [Austen Henry Layard, envoy extraordinary to Madrid, ambassador at Constantinople] , which Maw should see, as Layard is vexed that he did not recognise Maw [enclosure not present]; he sends his regards to Mrs Maw [Frederica Mary Maw]
