He is sending Maw by rail the drawings that Miss Smith [Matilda Smith, Hooker’s second cousin] has done; she has done three per week as the days are short; he pays her ten shillings per week, so the drawings come to three shillings each; it has been useful work for her; if Maw has further thoughts on his proposal to try her at Benthall she will be free after the 20th, when his children come home from school and the house will be too full for her to stay; she has had no practice on stone [lithography], but will soon be ready to begin; they are making great reforms in their herbaceous grounds
