He thanks Maw for his attention to Dewar [Daniel Dewar, foreman of the herbaceous grounds at Kew]; he is glad that Maw thinks him to be knowledgeable, as finding good foremen is always on his mind; he is glad that Maw sent him to Westcombe’s[?]; the ‘inconspicuous’ orchid will be welcome, and they will give Maw some in exchange; he is glad to hear that the Crocus book is so far advanced; he is single handed at Kew as Dyer [William Turner Thiselton-Dyer, Hooker’s assistant] is in Italy with Hooker’s daughter [Harriet Anne Thiselton-Dyer, botanical artist], and Smith [John Smith, curator at Kew] has six months' leave
