Scope & content
Written from Royal Gardens, Kew. Manuscript
They are overworked in Smith’s [John Smith, curator at Kew] absence; he is behind on all his correspondence; he also goes to town every day as Bentham [George Bentham, botanist] is ill; he encloses a list of the croci that they are sure of the names of, which is a miserable collection after all the trouble he has had to keep them together; the Crocus bed suffered during the formation of the rock garden, and he had to call attention repeatedly to the labourers running their barrows over it, knocking over tallies and such; they have written for all that Maw indicated and shall do so for any other that he lets them know of; they will be glad to see Maw whenever he can come, and he is welcome to stay the night; they are still hunting for the Tetuan [Tetouan, Morocco] sketch; he asks if he should send [his sketch of] Beni Hosmar [mountains near Tetouan, Morocco] or keep it until Maw visits; the enclosed list is of croci at Kew which they are sure answer to their names and how many of each there are. 3 Jul 1883. 3 page letter (1 sheet)
Enclosed is a page comprising a manuscript list of Crocus names in a different hand ‘which we are sure answer to their names’. Undated [c.Jul 1883]. 1 page enclosure (1 sheet)
