Maw’s Leucanthemum is Leucanthemum maximum; Smith [John Smith, curator at Kew] tells him there is only one error in the labels, which he will tell Maw of in the next list; when he sees Miss North [Marianne North, botanical artist] he will ask if she remembers Maw; she now lives in Surrey near Godalming, and intends to stay there to improve her health; they are suffering from drought; he asks Maw to let him know when he will next be at Kew, as he now spends the night in Sunningdale, and is at Kew between 10am and 5.30pm; Planchon [Jules Emile Planchon, botanist] is coming in a week to study Vitis for a monograph; his second son Charles [Charles Paget Hooker], who has taken a practice at Cirencester, is getting married in September in Norfolk to a very nice young lady [Sophia Hase Lombe]; his third son [Brian Harvey Hodgson Hooker], the mining engineer, is thinking of seeking his fortune in Victoria, Australia; he is very steady and if he can get anything to do he will do well; his fourth son [Reginald Hawthorn Hooker] has just earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Paris at 18; none of them are botanically minded.
