He thinks Maw should publish a brief synopsis or catalogue of the croci with synonyms in the ‘Gardeners’ Chronicle’ in anticipation of his monograph; this would not interfere with the book’s sale and would increase interest; he suggests only giving general habitats and minimal information on culture and such, so that it will be necessary to refer to the monograph; others could then contact Maw with further observations or information in advance of publication; he recommends sending copies to other botanists for criticism; he has found two samples of mounts in Smith’s [John Smith, curator at Kew] office, which Maw sent since Hooker’s departure, which are both excellent; it only remains to get the slabs which Maw put in hand on 22 Jan; he supposes these mounts are those mentioned in Maw’s letter of 1 Mar as costing four shillings per dozen; he thanks Maw for the Silurian brachiopods, which are very unusual; he visited Lavallee’s [Pierre Alphonse Martin Lavallee] garden [Arboretum de Segrez] at Segrez [France] and was shocked by the destruction of trees and shrubs by the cold of the last two winters; the shrub collection is very good, the tree collection less so
