List of plants wanted from Sierra Leone following Don's visit
Written in an unidentified hand. Original pagination on the upper right-hand corner
Includes Combretum ('two beautiful species with scarlet flowers growing at King Tom's Point [Kingtom, Sierra Leone]. Dr Barry [William Barry, deputy inspector of hospitals in Sierra Leone] was with Mr Don [George Don] the day he gathered specimens of them'), Osbeckia ('the roots of this plant are used in making the Loosoo beer. It is known to Dr Barry [William Barry]. Seeds may be sown in earth but roots are more desirable'), Epedendri (air plants) [Epidendrum] ('there is a large tree on the road to Congo Town [Sierra Leone], left hand, after you pass the bridge, whereon air plants are growing in great profusion. There are a few sorts there which we have not been able to bring to England, and there is also on the left of the road to Mr Macauley's [Kenneth Macaulay, merchant and colonial official in Sierra Leone] farm, a tree of the country cherry with two strange sorts upon it: they have cylindrical leaves'), Clerodendron ('three species. Flowers of the first scarlet, second orange, and the third white with red anthers. The plants are to be found near the governor's [Charles MacCarthy, governor of Sierra Leone] town. Mr Hammet, the governor's gardener, is the most likely person to get these'), black plum ('young plants & seeds') and passifloras ('12 species. The governor's gardener was with Mr Don when he collected some of these') [here the list includes 14 more plants]
