The bill has been annotated in pencil and signed by John Forbes and dated 4 Feb 1822: 'If I should not return to England I request this bill to be paid out of my wages'
Note signed by John Forbes of sums owed on his departure from England. Written on HMS Leven, 'at sea', 23 Jun 1822. Includes £4 8s to Mr J. Quail [John Quail, tailor and draper] of Paradise Street, Liverpool, £5 to Mr Phillip Burrough [unidentified] of Edge Hill, Liverpool, and £5 to Mr H. Shepherd [Henry Shepherd, botanist, nephew of John Shepherd, curator of the Liverpool Botanic Gardens] at the Botanic Gardens, Liverpool: 'I direct that in case of my death the three said sums be paid out of the wages due to me by the Horticultural Society', and 'the bundle of specimens of ferns and another of mosses sealed up and left with the last named gentleman be given to my father [John Forbes senior], if alive, or to either of my brothers, James [James Forbes] or George Forbes in case of his death'
