Extracts from letters of John Forbes relating to his expenses, copied in an unidentified hand
'In addition to the items charged, a further sum has been paid on this account, the exact amount of which cannot at present be ascertained; the following extracts from Mr Forbes' correspondence being the whole of the particulars in the possession of the Society'. Includes an extract from letter No 18, from Cape of Good Hope [South Africa], dated 12 May 1823 [for letter No 18 from John Forbes to the Horticultural Society, 12 May 1823, see RHS/Col/3/5/37], noting two bills for payment, one for £25 16s 6 1/2d from Madagascar, dated 27 Dec 1822 and backdated 'because the sale of the officers' effects took place at that time, as mentioned in my letter No 16 [for letter No 16 from John Forbes to the Horticultural Society, 29 Dec 1822, see RHS/Col/3/5/31]'. The other bill for £30 from Cape of Good Hope, dated 11 Apr 1823, 'is for packing cases, travelling and some expenses on my own account'. Includes an extract from letter No 19, dated 19 Jun 1823, [for letter No 19 from John Forbes to the Horticultural Society, 19 Jun 1823, see RHS/Col/3/5/41], noting he had 'been obliged to draw for 67 pounds eight shillings and ten pence in three bills' from Cape of Good Hope: 'a considerable portion of this money is on my own account for which I shall duly account to the Society the rest for my expenses at the Cape'
