Proboscis-like prolongation of snouts is more common [in pigs] than in any other animal; Maw should write to W.H. Flower Esq [William Henry Flower], curator of the College of Surgeons, to ask if they would like the specimen; the elephant’s visit to the sow before the birth of the deformed piglet is mere coincidence [Maw proposed that the terror of encountering an elephant had caused the sow to birth an elephant-like piglet]; if Maw finds organic remains in the geological Drift beds of North Wales it will be an interesting discovery; he is very unwell.
