Marked 'letter 1st'
This is the first opportunity he has had to write about the journey, as they have not come across ships bound for England before this; he visited Angier-Point [Anyer] briefly in the afternoon, and is hoping to go on shore again tomorrow morning; he is writing in a hurry as he is unsure which ship will transport the letter; he has seen some plants ('which is gratifying'), including plantains, palms and cocoa trees 'in fine perfection'; sailing for six weeks 'in the cold' has damaged many of the plants brought from England; he lost Passiflora quadrangularis and Passiflora racemosa to cold before he boarded the ship ('to my knowledge one night when I was in London'), and the two plums, two peaches, two nectarines, noblys peach [noblesse peach], two cherries, apricots, violets, strawberries, two kinds of rhubarb and mint were lost during the journey; he is hopeful that the sea kale will recover; he will alter the design of the cases [for storing plants], despite the specific instructions for building he received, as salt water coming in through the canvas is causing four different kinds of vines to die; he is enclosing a letter for his wife to be forwarded by Sabine [enclosure not present]; he sent the first parcel of letters by the ship Prince Royal, sailing from Batavia [Jakarta] to England
