Observations on the differences in the size and health of plants growing in different environments; at Anger Point [Anyer, Indonesia] Parks saw pineapples growing in the wild, very healthy and some very large, seemingly producing more than one crop on the same plant, as some of the plants were very long in the stem; many were growing close to and shaded by large bamboos, in sandy soil; there were pineapples on the mountain called Green Island [Ilha Verde, Macau], Black Antigua variety: 'they looked very bad from the poorness of the soil and exposed situation'; travelling over the Lapa hills in Macao, Parks was astonished (and 'had it not been for this I should not have commented on this subject at all probably') to see sizeable healthy pineapples, growing along a small stream, with some plants having slipped into the water, with water running over them during heavy rains, leaving sand and earth among them: 'it seems obvious to me that this plant is fonder of water than many people are aware of'; the plants were shaded by grass and other plants growing around them, and frequently also grew in hedgerows and thickets: 'all looked the best where shaded in that kind of way'
